Graduates would be able to enrol in Ph.D. programmes right away under the new pattern, according to University Grants Commission Chair M. Jagadesh Kumar. He added that until the four-year curriculum is fully implemented, three-year undergraduate programmes won't be cancelled.

It was stated earlier this week that the new credit and curriculum framework for undergraduate (UG) courses would establish honours degree programmes as a four-year programme.

He responded that "there is no deadline but we will continue to cooperate with higher education institutions to implement the FYUP as quickly as feasible" and pledged that the three-year courses wouldn't be stopped until the four-year programme was fully implemented.

The first advantage of the FYUP, according to the UGC chief, is that students are not need to complete a Master's degree in order to enrol in a PhD programme. They can also choose a single or double major to learn more about a certain topic. According to him, the inclusion of value-added courses, multidisciplinary courses, ability-enhancing courses, skill-enhancing courses, and internships in the FYUP will increase students' options to pursue higher education or employment.
