Summary
UGC declared 21 universities across nine states in India as fake
These universities have been functioning against the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, which states that only universities established through central, provincial or state laws and private institutions designated as deemed-to-be universities shall be allowed to confer degrees upon students

University grants Commission (UGC) on Friday declared 21 universities across nine states in India as fake. “At least 21 self-styled, unrecognised institutions which are functioning in contravention of the UGC Act, have been declared as fake universities and these are not empowered to confer any degree," said UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain.

In an official statement, UGC warns students and the public from enrolling in these 21 ‘self-styled’ universities. “General public, students, parents and other stakeholders are cautioned through this public notice not to take admission in the above mentioned self-styled institution, taking admission in such self-styled institution may jeopardise the career of the students,” read the UGC statement.

These universities have been functioning against the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, which states that only universities established through central, provincial or state laws and private institutions designated as deemed-to-be universities shall be allowed to confer degrees upon students. The state-wise list of these fake universities has been topped by the Nation’s capital, with the number being 8. Additionally, 2 universities of West Bengal have also been declared as ‘fake’, breaching the UGC Act, 1956.
