The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) will now also be a pen-and-paper test, starting December 11.

Registration is open in India, the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the authority that owns and conducts TOEFL, has announced.

TOEFL is a standardised examination to assess the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enrol in English-speaking universities. The test scores are accepted by more than 11,000 universities and other institutions in over 150 countries. It's the only test that measures all four academic English skills — reading, listening, speaking, and writing — the way they are actually used in a classroom.

Types of TOEFL

TOEFL iBT is offered in three different modes, so candidates can choose the option that best suits their needs and preferences:

TOEFL iBT: Test on a computer at one of the authorised test centres located around the world.

TOEFL iBT Home Edition: Test on a computer at home, monitored by a human proctor. Be sure to review and meet the 'At Home Testing Environment' and equipment requirements before you register.

TOEFL iBT Paper Edition: Test in two sessions — reading, listening, and writing on paper at a test centre, and speaking on a computer at home. The speaking section is taken at home on a computer monitored online by a human proctor, within two days of the paper section. Make sure that you meet the necessary environment and equipment requirements before registering.
