Antony began, his voice echoing with enthusiasm. “A few decades ago you became an engineer or a doctor if you were good in studies. But you saw, in the last decade or two, how this entire thing of STEM versus non-STEM got merged and a lot of career options, you could total up to more than about 1200 various career options which emerged before the school level student community. And each of these is a very exciting career option. So that’s one exciting opportunity cum challenge that lies before you as educators – how you will guide these young minds towards choosing the right career.”

As he spoke, the room was charged with energy. The principals and educators, with their eyes gleaming with inspiration, hung onto every word. Antony’s insights into India’s youthful demographic and its potential to dominate the global workforce by 2030 ignited a spark of excitement and possibility.

“Preparing students to not only meet the challenges of our nation but also to become holistic individuals who view the world as their stage is essential,” Antony continued, his passion palpable. He emphasised the unique challenges posed by the digital age, particularly the short attention span of today’s youth. “Today’s youth is energetic but has a short attention span. Engaging them in the classroom is an exciting journey. We, as educators, are performing artists. Our ability to captivate our audience—our students—depends on our performance.”

Antony’s discourse on the pervasive influence of technology, especially the internet and smartphones, struck a chord with the audience. He referred to this phenomenon as the “cheapest addiction,” urging educators to harness this technology positively, turning it around from a potential distraction to a powerful educational tool.

The highlight of his speech was the exploration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its potential to revolutionise education. Drawing a parallel to the advent of computers three decades ago, Antony assured educators that AI, particularly generative AI, could be a valuable asset in personalising education and enhancing pedagogical methods.
