A total of 332 economically weak students from Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Scheduled Castes (SC) from in and around West Bokaro received Jyoti Fellowship Awards from Tata Steel’s West Bokaro Division.

An awards ceremony was held at the sports complex in Ramgarh district of Jharkhand on March 13, where the toppers received the cash grant along with a certificate and a visual dictionary. A total of 176 girls and 156 boys were felicitated at the programme.

An amount of Rs 16.72 lakh has been disbursed for the fellowship.

Ramgarh deputy commissioner Madhvi Mishra was the chief guest on the occasion along with Manish Mishra, general manager, West Bokaro Division, Tata Steel.

Lauding the efforts of Tata Steel in the field of education and skill development, Madhvi Mishra said: “This is just the beginning for all those have been awarded today. The district administration and Tata Steel are making sure that all who aspire are provided with a platform to excel and be mainstreamed. The Jyoti Fellowship is one such initiative. Recognitions indeed encourage individuals to work harder and pave a better tomorrow for themselves. I congratulate everyone, especially girls who are trying to excel in the field of education as they are setting examples for others like them to follow.”

Manish Mishra said it has been Tata Steel’s constant endeavour to promote education in its areas of operation through its various Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. “Education is the foundation on which tomorrows are built. The Jyoti Fellowship programme caters not only to economically weak meritorious students but also keeps their dreams alive.”

The Tata Steel Foundation identifies deserving candidates from operational areas of the company based on a merit test. Student have to appear for a common written test conducted every year at two levels — school (Class VIII) and college (graduation first year). Once a student qualifies the test, he/she becomes eligible for fresh fellowship as well as renewal for consecutive years, subject to 45% marks scored in annual examination conducted by the respective school/college every academic year.
