Tamil Nadu launches scheme to admit one lakh students in govt schools

The Tamil Nadu government is set to enrol one lakh students to government schools in this academic year through its new scheme “Illam Thedi Kalvi” (Education at doorstep). 

This scheme was drawn up by the Tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. Stalin in order to bridge the gap in learning that was caused due to the pandemic. It is also in order to set right the psychological issues of students due to the pandemic. Through this the volunteers of the state education department will be reaching the doorsteps of the students and providing them with education. 

According to the state education department of Tamil Nadu, about 86,550 people have registered to be volunteers to teach children under the government's scheme. Among them there are 67,961 women, 18,557 men and 32 trans-people.

The school management committee will select the volunteers directly based on their educational qualifications, place of residence and experience. 

According to the CM, the scheme “Illam Thedi Kalvi” is said to improve the school level education in the state and the volunteers will act as goodwill messengers of government schools. The scheme was designed by taking inputs from educationists from UNESCO and the Economic Advisory Council of the state government.

As per the minister the programme will be launched in 12 districts as a pilot project which will help the government study every aspect of the programme very closely. From November 14, 2021 onwards the scheme will be extended to other districts.
