School heads get leadership training as WB government collaborates with IIM-Calcutta

According to a statement released on Monday, the West Bengal school education department has partnered with the IIM Calcutta to provide leadership development training for head teachers of state government-run and -aided schools. On June 17–18 at the IIM-C campus, the first batch of the second edition of the leadership programme was held. According to a release from IIM-C, the program's initial iteration was held in 2021–2022 and trained 985 head teachers throughout West Bengal in five batches.

The collaborative effort includes the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, which oversees the Class 12 state board exams. Over 2,000 head teachers will receive training in leadership development during the second edition this year, according to the announcement.

The IIM Calcutta professors R Rajesh Babu, Chetan Joshi, and Sumanta Basu will oversee the leadership programme. According to a report, by the chair of the IIM-C's Consultancy and Management Development Programmes (CMDP), Prof. Peeyush Mehta, this initiative will have a substantial effect on the environment of school education. "The materials in this programme have been chosen specifically for top teachers and administrative leaders in West Bengali schools. This complements IIM Calcutta's diverse array of leadership development offerings, according to the announcement.

Babu pointed out that school leaders have a significant impact on how the next generation, other instructors, and the community as a whole life and experience their lives. The main goal of the programme, according to Joshi, will be to empower and inspire school leaders to take the initiative and act as change agents for their educational institutions and communities. Basu discussed IIM-C's emphasis on using executive education to have a social effect and claimed this curriculum for school heads' leadership development will advance that effort.
