Bengaluru-based Jain (Deemed-to-be University), the host for the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) 2021, has bagged the top position in the sports tournament, with 20 gold, seven silver and five bronze medals, the varsity said in a statement.
Lovely Professional University (LPU) with 17 gold, 15 silver and 19 bronze medals, and Punjab University with 15 gold, nine silver and 24 bronze medals bagged the first runner-up and the second runner-up positions respectively.
The swimming team of Jain (Deemed-to-be University) secured 20 medals across several swimming events. Siva Sridhar emerged as the star swimmer by winning 11 gold medals and Olympian Shrihari Natraj won three gold medals in a record-breaking performance. Shrungi Bandekar won four golds in various women's swimming events.
Priya Mohan of the host university won the gold medal in the women's 200 metres race finale by defeating Asian Games’ champion and Olympian Dutee Chand. Priya won by clocking in at 23.90 seconds, while Dutee Chand of KIIT University came second at 24.90 seconds. Priya Mohan won gold in the women's 400m race as well.
Jain’s University’s seven-men karate team took the centre stage with Sayed Baba winning gold at the singles event. Both the men’s and women’s badminton teams of Jain University won gold. The university’s fencing, women’s pole vault and weightlifting teams registered exemplary performances and fetched medals.
