The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee won the Smart Move Innovative Urban Mobility Challenge held on November 8 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in collaboration with Smart Cities Mission, National Institute of Urban Affairs and GIZ India. The team from IIT Roorkee developed an interactive passenger information system to predict the crowding levels in the public transit system.

The system is developed by Amit Agarwal, professor of the Civil Engineering department, along with his students Arpit Shrivastava, Devesh Pratap Singh and Itisha Jain. The team was awarded by the secretary of MoHUA, Durga Shanker Mishra at the Sushma Swaraj Bhavan New Delhi in the 4th annual Urban Mobility Conference of India.

Ajit. K. Chaturvedi, director, IIT Roorkee congratulated the team, and said, “The work of the winning team amplifies the attractiveness of public transport. This will reduce our dependence on private motorized transport, which is an important goal to address the adverse environmental impact of private transport.”

The final product of the interactive passenger information system has an Android app and a web page replicating the digital passenger information board that is installed at the bus stops. The route planning algorithm, with the assistance of machine learning and artificial intelligence, uses the historical ticket data and predicts the level of crowding in the public transit system. The product also has computer vision models to indicate real-time occupancy of the public transport vehicles’ CCTV footage. For testing, the Capital Region Urban Transportation (CRUT) Bhubaneswar provided raw data. The team from the National Institute of Urban Affairs team provided inputs for the improvement of the final product.
