The two institutes signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard on May 4. Assam revenue and disaster management minister Jogen Mohan, IIT Guwahati director TG Sitharam and other officials were present at the event.

"In this new era of technology and education, this MoU is a great step towards helping the region. It’ll encourage people to work for the development of the region," said Mohan.

Expressing hope that the collaboration would prove fruitful, Sitharaman said, "We look forward to extending this technology to various other sectors in the near future."

The initiative has been taken to introduce knowledge-based technological advancement in the training curriculum for state officials, said Parameswar K Iyer, Dean of Public Relations and Branding at IIT Guwahati.

According to the MoU, IIT Guwahati will impart training to ASSTC administrative and technical staff in Survey and Settlement. Private candidates can also enrol in these training courses.

The course work duration will be one week for Recorder's Certificate Class Course (RCCC) students and four days for officer’s class, including one examination, submission of project report and a presentation at the end of the session.

Similar administrative steps have been taken since the liberalisation of drone laws last year. On April 14, the Haryana state government had announced the launch of an institute – under Drone Imaging and Information Service of Haryana Limited (DRIISHYA) – to train pilots in drone imaging, which could save a lot of time in capacity development.
