The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) introduced revised guidelines for the adoption and management of textbooks in schools, through a notification issued on August 12,2024. The official notification read, “The following amendments have been made in chapter 2, clause 2 4. 7 of the Affiliation Bye-Laws 2018, in respect of the rule position on the provisions for use of the textbooks by schools and will come into force from the date of issue of this notification.”
CBSE Updates Guidelines for Textbooks in Schools
For Classes I to VIII
- Schools are encouraged to use textbooks published by the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) or SCERT (State Council of Educational Research and Training).
- Schools can use additional materials if needed, but these should align with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE).These supplementary materials should provide essential information and include discussions, analysis, examples, and applications.
For Classes IX to XII
- Schools must mandatorily follow the NCERT textbooks as prescribed in the CBSE curriculum.
- If NCERT/ SCERT books are not available for certain subjects, they should use the CBSE books available online.
- Schools are allowed to use additional materials or digital content to support the textbooks, but this should also align with the NCF-SE.
Content Responsibility
- Schools need to carefully select any supplementary materials or books from private publishers to avoid content that might offend any class, community, gender, or religious group.
- Schools must list the prescribed books for all classes on their website and ensure that the list is accompanied by a signed declaration from the Manager and Principal. This declaration confirms that they have reviewed the content of the books and take responsibility for their selection.
- If any book with objectionable content is found, the school will be held accountable, and the CBSE will take appropriate action.
