Invention to reduce staff requirements and expenditure load of hospital

Researchers in Dhanbad’s IIT (Indian School of Mines-ISM) have developed a system to control pneumatic medical beds through EEG signals generated by the brain, which would reduce staff requirements and the expenditure load of hospitals.

The team of researchers of IIT (ISM) led by assistant professor of the mechanical engineering department Zafar Alam developed a system to control the pneumatic medical beds through EEG signals. EEG or electroencephalogram is a recording of brain activity.

“The move is aimed to help paralytic/severely affected patients to control the position of their pneumatic medical beds by the brain through EEG devices. The system developed as part of project worth around Rs 2 lakh of the institute fund, NVCTI (Naresh Vashisht Centre for Tinkering and Innovation) as well as personal fund is commercially viable compared to available ICU beds,” said a statement issued byIIT (ISM) dean media and branding Rajni Singh on Thursday.

The research team completed the project between August 2021 and May 2022 and later filed the patent application, saying that the system will help in ensuring efficient medical governance.

“The thought behind the project is to enable the paralytic, bedridden person to control or move and fix their medical beds without the requirement of any physical effort,” said Alam.
