Sushila Birla Memorial Day was celebrated on the 4 October 2024 at the Vidya Mandir Auditorium with a grand production titled 'Montage', showcasing the vignettes of Bengal. The programme was graced by the presence of Mrs Birla and other dignitaries.

It was a tribute to the rich history and cultural heritage of the state. The performance featured 250 students from various classes, coming together to showcase the region's vibrant legacy through a blend of choral recitation, music and dance.

The programme aimed to weave together significant historical and cultural milestones of Bengal in a cohesive narrative, celebrating its contribution to art, literature, freedom movement and social reforms.

As a prelude to the event, there were workshops on alpona art, terracotta pottery, shara painting, shola pith, outdoor photography at Kumartuli and Chhau. The artwork of the students was displayed in a magnificent installation at the foyer of the auditorium. 

The evening was a visual and auditory spectacle, filled with captivating dramatic performances, soulful songs, mesmerising dance sequences and an elaborate set. Performative art forms like Jhumur, Baul, Raibeshe, Jatra and Chhau were flawlessly executed by students. 

Key moments included episodes from Bengal's renaissance period, highlighting Rabindranath Tagore and his timeless creations. The performances also touched upon the struggles of the Indian independence movement, including the pivotal role played by Bengal in shaping the nation’s political consciousness. In the modern times, Satyajit Ray and his genius planted Bengal firmly on the world stage. As part of the programme, a homage was paid to the great maestro.

Through this cultural montage, the audience was invited to explore the depths of Bengal’s historical and cultural evolution, reflecting on its profound influence on both the region and the nation.
