Calcutta University has issued a notice announcing the introduction of an 80 per cent domicile quota for admission of general category students to its four-year BTech courses from the 2024-25 academic session.

The notice issued on Monday says: “The state (West Bengal) residential/ domicile requirement is applicable for admission to the above-mentioned (BTech) courses. 80 per cent of the unreserved seats are earmarked for West Bengal domicile candidates.”

The notice says the candidates will have to furnish valid domicile certificates in a prescribed format issued by the competent authority at the time of admission.

A CU official said 80 per cent of the 424 BTech students where students will be admitted based on the aspirants’ performance in the state joint entrance examinations, have been reserved for candidates who are domiciled in Bengal.

The state JEE results were announced last week.

A JEE board official said only those candidates will be considered as domicile of Bengal who have either been residing in the state continuously for a minimum of 10 years as of December 31, 2023, or whose parents are permanent residents of the state with a permanent address in the state.

The engineering and technology faculty council of the university decided to introduce the domicile policy late in May.

The notice issued earlier this week also says all the BTech seats have been converted into four-year BTech programmes.

Until last year of the 400-odd seats, 253 were in the four-year programme and the rest in the three-year one for the BSc graduates.

Some additional seats have been created for BSc graduates to pursue BTech but they won’t be allowed admission based on their graduation results. They have to write an entrance test to be conducted by the JEE board.

“The decision on the introduction of domicile quota and conversion of all seats to a four-year BTech programme has been communicated to the higher education department,” said Amit Roy, the secretary of the faculty.
