Calcutta University has deferred the sixth-semester exams (theoretical papers) of BA and BSc (honours), and BA and BSc (general) to the middle of July because of the panchayat polls, which will be held on July 8.

The practical exams of BSc (honours) have been deferred, too.

The exams in the theoretical papers, which were scheduled from June 27, will now start on July 15, the university said in a notice.

According to the previous schedule, the BA and BSc (honours) sixth semester exams (theoretical papers) were to continue till July 7, a day before the panchayat elections.

The BA and BSc (general) sixth-semester exams were to continue till July 12.

According to the revised schedule, the theoretical papers in the BA and BSc (honours) courses (sixth semester) will start on July 15 and end on July 22.

The theoretical papers in the BA and BSc (general) courses (sixth semester) will be held from July 15 to July 25.

The honours practical exams (sixth semester), which were scheduled from July 8 to 17, will now be held from July 24 to August 5.

An official of the university said many of the affiliated colleges in Howrah, Hooghly and South 24-Parganas will be used as distribution centre-cum-receipt centres (DCRC) for the elections.

“The schedule of the panchayat poll was clashing with that of the examinations. Since colleges in the districts will be requisitioned by the state election commission a few days before the polls, the exams could not be conducted,” the official said.

“The dates have been pushed back following consultations with the state government.”

Over 1 lakh students will write the examinations.

A senior official at CU said: “The examinations are being deferred because of the panchayat elections.”

The time and venue printed on the admit card will remain the same, the official said.

Syamalendu Chatterjee, president of the All Bengal Principals’ Council, said: “CU could have brought the dates forward to avoid a clash with the polls.”
