Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan was back after a gap of two years with its annual day. Tiled Deedhiti: Inspiration, the celebration commemorated their foundation Day at Science City auditorium.
The celebration began with lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the deputy director Sujata Ghosh and director G.V. Subramanian along with other guests and students. The colourful and informative annual school magazine Ripples was also released, which gave room to budding talents to show their creativity and potential.
Also present was the founder- principal of the institution, Jibanananda Goswami. “I stand on this podium after 22 years and am grateful to the faculty for inviting me back,” he said. “This school has undergone significant development since I joined. Initially, it only offered classes up to VIII and had just 14 teachers, without any affiliation. Bhavans combines traditional values with modern outlook and I am proud of the school’s achievements and its students,” he said.
The school’s annual report was presented by principal Arun Kumar Dasgupta, in which he mentioned the achievements of the students in various fields like academics, sports and co-curricular activities. Prizes were also given out.
Hiya Paul of Class XII was excited to receive a number of awards. She won one for being the best orator, for making it to the top 50 of Youth Ideation, a platform of ideas from students of classes VI to XII, for winning first place in national youth parliament organisation and more. “These moments are special for me not just because I am receiving these prizes, but also because this is my final year in school,” she smiled.
Best of Bengal
The cultural programme titled “A glimpse of Bengal” was most awaited. This audio visual presentation along with skits and dances saw participation of more than 400 students. Starting their journey with Darjeeling, they presented dances upholding the unique attire and lifestyle of people from different regions like Malda, Birbhum, Bankura, Nadia, Burdwan and finally the Sundarbans.
They performed to the baul song Shey abar kemon pagol dressed in baul outfits, to Ore grihobashi and Tomar hawaye hawaye, portraying the celebration of Basanta utsav and also Santhal dance.
Pupils also performed a skit on the Battle of Plassey where Robert Clive had defeated Siraj ud-Daulah with the help of Mir Jafar.
Students also presented a fashion show, displaying various weaves of Bengal like taant, khesh, jamdani, kantha etc. The final portion of the programme focused on the capital of Bengal, Calcutta, and its famous Durga Puja. The students put up an energetic dance performance, paying tribute to the Durga and Kali.
“We, at Bhawans, strive to mould young minds into valuable assets of society. As an organisation we have always motivated our students to do their best in life and being the principal here has been a comparatively easy task because of the understanding and supportive management, co-operative parents, disciplined and sincere students and dedicated teachers,” added Dasgupta.
