Amyt Datta needs no introduction to Calcuttans. He has nurtured generations of musicians and played with global greats. For many decades, the lyricism and fire of Amyt Datta's guitar playing has wowed audiences across India as he played with outfits ranging from the classic rock of Shiva to the world music of D for Brother, (with his cousin, the late percussion virtuoso Monojit “Kochu” Datta), to the jazz-rock of Pink Noise.
Datta talks to guitarist Warren Mendonsa about the glory days of the Calcutta music scene, how it’s evolved and recalls many anecdotes, including how he bought his first dream guitar from a shop in Fancy Market. 'Six Strings & Other Stories' is a new interview series by Mendonsa. On his YouTube channel Blackstratblues, he interviews guitar players and has hosted Ehsaan Noorani of Ehsaan Loy fame. Mendonsa himself is best known for being a member of Mumbai band, Zero. He is also nephew of musician and music director, Loy Mendonsa.
