Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former judge of Calcutta High Court who joined the BJP and contesting as the party's candidate from Tamluk constituency in the Lok Sabha polls, got a breather after Justice Tirthankar Ghosh of the high court issued an interim order restraining police from taking any coercive measure against him.

The former judge was apprehending that police might take harsh steps against him in connection with a scuffle between BJP and Trinamool Congress supporters at Tamluk on May 4.

On May 4, when Gangopadhyay, in a procession led by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was going to file his nomination, some Trinamool Congress affiliated teachers and staff of school who had been staging a demonstration at the roadside, had started shouting slogans.

The BJP supporters, who were present at the rally, started counter-slogans and at a point in time, a scuffle between the two group started, in which two people were seriously injured.

After the incident, an FIR was lodged with Tamluk police station accusing the former judge and Adhikari under section 307 of IPC. Apprehending arrest in this case connection, Gangopadhyay had moved court, from which he had resigned a few months back.

On Thursday, the petition by the former judge came up for hearing before Justice Tirthankar Ghosh of Calcutta High Court.

After hearing the petition in detail, Justice Ghosh issued the interim order.
