Actor Shyamal Ghoshal , who had worked with Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak, passed away at his south Calcutta residence on Saturday at 11.15pm. Ghoshal, 80, was suffering from Parkinson’s disease. He is survived by wife, three daughters and two sons. Ghoshal made his debut with Headmaster and went on to act in Ray’s Charulata, Mahanagar and Chiriakhana and in Ghatak’s Subarnarekha and Jukti Takko Ar Gappo. He had also ventured into direction with docu-features like Dastavez, Karna Kunti Sambad and Britya. Five men were arrested from the taxi stand of Calcutta airport on Sunday with fake notes of Rs 1 lakh. One group was handing over the notes to another when they were arrested, police said. A 26-year-old woman and her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter died of burns after the mother was allegedly set on fire by her in-laws over dowry at Domjur in Howrah on Saturday night. While the child died the same night at Howrah District Hospital, the mother, Tusi Mondal, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday afternoon. Her husband Dipankar Mondal, 32, and father-in-law Gopal, 62, have been arrested. A 27-year-old man was found hanging in his room in Burtolla on Saturday night. Police said local residents broke into the house of Supriyo Bhattacharya at 7.30pm to find him hanging from the ceiling fan. He was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. No suicide note was found, said the police.
