Balurghat, Sept 5: A high school teacher today donated Rs 1 lakh for building a laboratory in her school in Gangarampur — a gift for her students on Teachers’ Day and a tribute to her husband, a former headmaster of the school who passed away recently.

Nioti Ghosh, an assistant teacher of Kadihti Belbari High school, handed over a cheque for Rs 1 lakh to the headmaster and the secretary of the managing committee, Badal Malakar, during a cultural programme to celebrate Teachers’ Day.

The history teacher’s husband, Paresh Pal, was a headmaster and one of the founders of the school, almost 50km from here.

He passed away six months ago.

“I had worked with him here in this school. He did a lot for the institution. After his death, I kept thinking how to honour him for his dedication as a teacher. My family told me that if I do something for the school that would be a tribute to him. I am happy that I have donated the money. I would have been happier if I could give more money to the institution,” Ghosh said.

Ghosh’s father had given land for the school.

“Nioti Ghosh, an assistant teacher, donated Rs 1 lakh today to construct a science laboratory,” said Partha Sarkar, the headmaster.

“We started the science stream this year. But because of lack of funds, we did not have a laboratory, which is essential for the students. A few days ago, the teacher approached us, saying she was willing to donate money for the construction of the laboratory,” he added.

Kadihat Belbari High school has around 1,500 students.

“Her father Niranjan Ghosh had donated land for the school. Her husband was a dedicated teacher. Niotidi is also like them. We are grateful to her for her contribution,” said a teacher.

Badal Malakar, secretary of the school, said: “We have been asking for funds to build the laboratory. This donation will be of immense help. Gestures like these send a message to the society. That is why teachers are loved and respected.”
