Footballers held for sleaze

Three Nigerian footballers were arrested from their flat at Kalitala in Garfa on Friday for involvement in a sleaze racket.

Garfa police raided the flat shared by Wahid Akule of Mohammedan Sporting Club, Michael Segum of Kalighat Sporting and Hasan Mohammed A Zola of Peerless. A woman was also arrested.

Molest: A 19-year-old college student was allegedly molested by a youth near the Portuguese church on Brabourne Road. The girl has lodged a complaint with Burrabazar police station. The police said the accused was known to the victim.

Shop theft: Two persons were arrested on Friday for allegedly stealing Rs 16 lakh from a showroom of electronic appliances at Maniktala last month. Police said Sanjib Dey, an employee of the shop, had arranged for the entry of Kanai Barik into the showroom. Barik hid in the mezzanine floor when the shop was locked for the night. When the shop was opened the next morning, the cash box was found broken. Barik took advantage of the commotion that followed and fled. Dey and Barik were arrested from their homes in Egra, East Midnapore. A part of the booty was recovered.

Noise protest: Residents of Madhyapara in Kaikhali on Friday lodged a complaint against Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality chairman Tapas Chatterjee for violating noise norms in a cultural programme organised to mark Bhasha Shahid Divas.

Infiltrators nabbed: Four suspected Bangladeshi infiltrators were arrested from the Calcutta Leather Complex in Bantala on Friday. Ashmad Gaji, Rabu Gaji, Bachchu Munshi and Bashir Sheikh, aged between 25 and 30, had allegedly crossed the border at Bongaon in North 24-Parganas and assembled for robbery.

New train: The Shalimar-Secunderabad Weekly Express was flagged off on Friday.
