Suspected Trinamul men attacked homes of CPM workers and supporters - an attempt was made to set one of the homes on fire - in at least two places in the city on Sunday.

A gang of around 50 Trinamul workers went on the rampage in New Garia's Panchasayar on Sunday morning, hurling stones and bricks at the houses of around 15 CPM supporters and workers.

The gang allegedly emptied a jar of kerosene in a room in one of the houses and tried to set it on fire.

Shahid Smriti Colony, where the homes were attacked, falls under the Jadavpur Assembly constituency, which Sujan Chakraborty of the Left-Congress alliance has wrested from Trinamul's Manish Gupta by 14,942 votes.

This was the second time since the Assembly election results were announced on Thursday that Sahid Smriti Colony, near Peerless Hospital, was rocked with political violence.

Three cops were injured in a clash between CPM and Trinamul workers late on Thursday.

Shahid Nagar residents said the 50-strong Trinamul gang carried out the attack on Sunday in the presence of several policemen. The houses that came under attack were spread across 1sq km, an area the gang covered on foot in around an hour.

"I was home with my two sons around 11.10am when I suddenly heard the sound of windowpanes breaking. The mob was abusing my elder son," said Rama Pal, whose elder son Sanjay, 21, is a CPM supporter and takes part in party meetings and rallies. "They also broke the tin cover of our shop with stones," said Rama.

Sanjay was arrested later in the day.

Glass shards were strewn across the rooms when Metro visited Pal's one-storeyed house.

"The Trinamul men said they were not bothered about the party's defeat in Jadavpur as they have won across the state," a neighbour of the Pals said.

The brick pieces the gang had thrown at the Pals' house had been dumped on the roadside before the elections to fill up potholes. Several pieces of bricks were found lying on the terrace of the house.

The tiled roof of Rama's neighbour was damaged, too, as several bricks the gang threw landed on it.

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee termed the attack a one-off case. "This is nothing major. It is a one-off case. We have intervened and sorted out the matter," he said.

About 25m from the Pals' house, four huts came under attack. The occupants of the huts were all CPM supporters.

Gita Mondal, who lives in one these huts, said the gang had turned up around 11.30am. "My husband (Nepal) was a polling agent in the Assembly elections. We were attacked because he is an active CPM worker. They beat up my daughter," said Gita.

Nepal's brother Gopal had locked the door of his room from inside and pushed himself against it to prevent the men from barging in. "Had they succeeded in coming it, they would have beat me up and ransacked the furniture of the room," Gopal said.

Around 12.30pm, some men attacked the house of Bapi Das, who switched to the CPM from Trinamul during the civic polls last year. The attackers rammed a large log through the concrete grille of a window and threw a kerosene jar inside the room. "They lit a matchstick and threw it inside. We panicked but managed to douse the flames. Our room would have been gutted," said Bapi's wife Sumitra Das.

Around 1.15am, a few suspected Trinamul supporters threw stones at the Kasba house of CPM leader Satarup Ghosh, who contested from Kasba and lost to Trinamul's Javed Khan.

"It was around 1.15am when I heard some men asking me to step out. I saw through a window that 12-13 men had gathered in front of our house. There were three-four motorcycles, too," Satarup said. "When I didn't step out, they hurdled bricks and stones at my house. They left after two-three minutes," Satarup said.

In all three places, the attackers included residents of the colony.

"This colony still has a strong support base of the CPM but there are some Trinamul supporters now," a resident said.

Across the colony, CPM flags were found fluttering in equal numbers as the Trinamul flags.

Samya Ganguly, a CPM leader in the area, said they were surprised that the police had picked up those who were attacked. "It is strange that the police have arrested victims. Our workers have identified about 15 people who had attacked the houses - including Moti, Khuku, Jamai Santanu and Ranjit in the complaint," the CPM leader said.

An officer of Panchasayar police station said they had picked up about 15 people from both sides. "We have arrested Tanmoy Dasgupta and Sanjay Pal, who are CPM supporters. We have also arrested Santanu Naskar and Khuku Byapari, who are Trinamul supporters," the officer said.
