That the world’s first known woman doctor lived in Egypt around 2700 BC? In the Old Kingdom period (2600-2100 BC) of Ancient Egypt, professions were open to both men and women. Records show more than 100 female physicians but Merit Ptah is the first named one. She is also the first woman known by name in the history of science! Her image was painted on a tomb, where she was called the “chief physician”. This Merit Ptah is different from Merit-Ptah, wife of Ramose, governor of Thebes.
