Sept. 17: A homemaker and her friend have been arrested in Bantra, Howrah, for allegedly killing the woman's husband, shortly after she went to a police station to accuse him of assault.

Police suspect the murder of Ratan Nath, 44, last night was the fallout of an affair between his wife Sarmistha and Rajib Mondal, who used to visit the couple's house to train their dogs.

"Nath was hit on the back of his head with a blunt object," an officer of Bantra police station said.

"Sarmistha said she found him lying in a garage close to his house."

Sarmistha and Rajib were arrested following a complaint by Nath's mother, who accused the duo of murdering her son.

The police said Nath accused Rajib at a feast organised on the occasion of Vishwakarma Puja of having an affair with his wife.

"A fight broke out between the two but others at the feast managed to pacify them," an officer said.

"Sarmistha later turned up at the police station and alleged that Ratan had assaulted her. We went to the couple's house and questioned Ratan. When we asked the woman to lodge a complaint, she said she would settle the matter amicably with her husband. We returned to the police station and an hour later, learnt that Ratan had been murdered."

Rajib and Sarmistha were arrested after they allegedly failed to give "satisfactory" replies to questions asked by the police.

The two have been remanded in police custody till September 24.
