Howrah: A woman in her 20s and a man were killed and 10 people injured in two road accidents in Howrah on Friday.

The first accident occurred on Bankim Setu near Howrah station when the driver of a state transport department bus lost control of the vehicle and reversed around 9.30am, police said.

"The bus from Sealdah was taking a turn at Bangabasi More. The driver wanted to park in the queue when he lost control and reversed. A private came up from behind. Two women who were crossing the road got trapped between the buses," said a police officer.

Upama Mukherjee and Deblina Roy were critically injured and taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Upama was declared dead and Deblina was admitted.

"Upama's heart and lungs were badly damaged. Deblina suffered head injuries and is under observation," the officer said.

Upama, a resident of Rajballav Saha Lane in Howrah, had joined the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Corporation Ltd four months ago and was on her way to office when the accident occurred.

Deblina is studying biotechnology at the School of Tropical Medicine.

The driver of the private bus has been arrested, while the man who was at the wheel of the government bus is absconding.

The other accident occurred on Kona Expressway, near Santragachi, on Friday afternoon. A private bus headed for Dhulagarh from Barasat lost control and rammed into a Tata Ace.

The driver of the smaller vehicle was taken to a nearby health-care unit, where he was declared dead.

"Nine people travelling in the bus were injured and admitted to Jaiswal Hospital in Howrah," said another police officer.
