Headed by: Commissioner of police, who will be of the inspector-general rank. Rajeev Kumar, an additional commissioner in Calcutta police, is a front-runner for the post.
Expanse: 109.96sqkm, comprising Salt Lake (including Sector V), New Town and the areas under the Lake Town, Baguiati and two airport police stations.
Divisions: Bidhannagar & Airport.
Population: 11 lakh.
Structure: The police commissioner will be assisted by a joint commissioner. For now, however, deputy commissioner (headquarters) will be the No. 2. The third tier will comprise assistant commissioners, one each for the detective and traffic departments and the two divisions. Special branch (for intelligence gathering), wireless and some other wings will be set up later. The police commissioner and the deputy commissioner (headquarters) will be the only two IPS officers in the commissionerate, initially.
Strength: The commissionerate has a sanctioned strength of 1,779 cops, a six-fold increase from the present strength of 300 in the eight police stations.
Biggest challenge: Night policing in a township that boasts a 24x7 tech sector and is a soft target for robbers. Another thrust area will be traffic, especially on the roads leading to Sector V from the Bypass and on VIP Road.
Traffic management: Four traffic guards will be set up — Bidhannagar, Lake Town, Airport and New Town. Each will be headed by an inspector.
Police patrol: No major change just yet. “It will take around six months for the commissionerate to become fully operational. But there will be more patrol vehicles post-switch,” said an officer.
Helpline: Trust your stars and dial 100. The police haven’t been able to provide a dedicated number yet for the new police district.
