Siliguri: Trinamul functionaries in Darjeeling have said the state leadership instructed them to refrain from overt political activities in the hills for some time to ensure their security and peace.

Some hill Trinamul leaders said the party wanted to take "measured treads" so that no undesirable situation cropped up in Darjeeling again.

"We don't want to take any chance. Normality has been restored in the hills and there is no point in taking up political activities right now as it can affect the peace process. Our state leaders have categorically told us to maintain restraint and do not plan any activity immediately," said a Trinamul leader.

A Trinamul insider said party leaders and supporters were vulnerable in the hills as far as the Bimal Gurung lobby of the Morcha was concerned.

"We are in a vulnerable situation and have no idea how much support Gurung enjoys in the hills now. Binay Tamang's support base is on the rise but that is not enough to ensure our security. Many Trinamul leaders and supporters stay in remote villages. There is an apprehension that if we resume political activities, there might be some protests or attacks on them from Gurung's side," said the insider.
