Alipurduar: Trinamul has picked up a woman who won a seat in Kumargram block for the post of sabhadhipati of Alipurduar zilla parishad.

The choice of Shila Das Sarkar is attributed to the ruling party's bid to win back whatever support it has lost in the block.

In the rural elections in May, Trinamul's performance has not been up to the mark in Kumargram and the BJP managed to wrest a majority of panchayat samiti seats.

The BJP has bagged the panchayat samiti and even won the Volka 1 panchayat, where Shila stays," said a party insider.

In fact, the BJP even secured more votes than Trinamul at the booth in Kumargram block where Dasrath Tirkey, the Trinamul MP of Alipurduar, is a voter. It is also believed that due to such performance of the party, James Kujur, the Kumargram MLA, was removed from the post of state tribal affairs minister.

A section of Trinamul leaders had been demanding that Santosh Burman, a senior Trinamul leader from Falakata block, where the party had performed well, be made the sabhadhipati.

"They had argued that why a candidate from Kumargram, where the leaders have failed to stop the BJP, should be put in the post instead of a candidate who represents the block where the party did well. However, it seems that the state leadership did not buy their logic," the insider added.

On Monday, Sarkar was selected as the sabhadhipati while Manoranjan Dey, who has won from a seat in Alipurduar 1 block, was made the sahakari sabhadhipati.

In the zilla parishad, Trinamul won 17 of 18 seats, while the BJP won one seat.

To prevent any confusion due to inner differences within the party, state minister and party leader Aroop Biswas had arrived in Alipurduar on Sunday. He held a meeting with all the 17 members in the presence of district leaders Mohan Sharma and Sourav Chakraborty.

After the selection, some senior leaders said the party's decision to put Sarkar in the post was a part of the strategy to win back support in Kumargram.
