Raiganj: North Dinajpur district police have arrested Subir Swrnakar, the principal accused in the murder of Bikash Majumdar, from the house of a BJP leader at Dabgram near Siliguri.

The police have also arrested Pradip Debnath, who was driving the SUV that carried the attackers from the spot where Bikash, a Trinamul leader of Itahar, was shot on August 31 evening.

Bikash was returning home on a motorcycle when he was attacked. They shot in the back of his head and fled the spot. Locals rushed him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The police had arrested four men earlier. The investigators came to know from them that Subir and Pradip were hiding at the house of Alok Sen, a BJP leader, at Dabgram.

Police sources said about a year ago, Bikash Majumdar was present at a kangaroo court where Subir had been asked to hand over his car to a person from whom he had borrowed Rs 60,000. "Bikash had even threatened Subir. It seems he killed Bikash out of revenge," said a police source.

Subir hails from Udaypur in Raiganj and is a known BJP worker, said sources.

Shankar Chakraborty, the district BJP president, said Subir held no post in our party.
