Tiger crosses river to stray into village

Residents of Basanti, in South 24-Parganas, were panic-stricken after a Royal Bengal Tiger entered their village on Sunday and injured one of them. A forest officer in Calcutta said the tiger entered through Herobhanga after crossing the Matla river. Villagers are keeping a close watch and trying to drive the tiger back into the forest, the official added.

Break-in yields cash, gold

A house in Ramkrishna Park, near Sodepur, on the northern fringes of the city, was burgled on Saturday evening. The miscreants broke open the door of the house of Shanta Basu and robbed cash and ornaments worth Rs 1 lakh. Police said the incident occurred while Basu was out shopping. No arrests have been made.

Man run over

An unidentified man, in his mid-30s, was run over on Sunday morning on Central Avenue, in the Jorasanko police station area, by a truck. Police said he was rushed to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead. The driver fled with the vehicle.

Shot and hacked

A 25-year-old man, Ezarul Sheikh, was murdered in Nodakhali, on the southern fringes of the city, on Sunday morning, over a family dispute. Police said he was first shot from close range and then hacked with a sharp weapon. Two persons were arrested.

Jewellery shop raid

A jewellery shop was burgled in Andul, Howrah, on Saturday night. Police said the burglars entered the shop by breaking open the shutter and collapsible gate. They stole jewellery worth Rs 50,000. No one was arrested.
