Metro services were disrupted for around 45 minutes from 11.38am on Monday after a 25-year-old woman jumped in front of a Dum Dum-bound train at Kalighat station. Jayasree Das, a Thakurpukur resident, was declared dead at SSKM Hospital. Trains were operated between Dum Dum and Maidan and New Garia (Kavi Subhash) and Tollygunge from 11.38am to 12.24pm.

Youth held

A youth was arrested on Sunday from a school on Park Street for allegedly appearing in the preliminary examination of All India Pre Medical Test instead of his brother. ijay Kumar, a resident of Gaya in Bihar, had come to the examination centre with his brother’s admit card. He was caught after the invigilator noticed the photograph on the admit card did not match his appearance.

AMRI bail

The high court on Monday concluded the hearing of the anticipatory bail plea moved by AMRI director Priti Sureka, who has been evading arrest since December 9. The division bench of Justice Asim Kumar Roy and Justice Toufique Uddin, however, adjourned their verdict in the case.

Tax deadline

Homeowners given a May 14-15 deadline for availing themselves of the property tax rebate will now get another week for payment. The decision was taken after collection of property tax was disrupted for over an hour on Monday because of a snag in the civic body’s central server.

Goon held

Dilip Banerjee, better known as Hatkata Dilip, was arrested on Monday in Baguiati for his alleged involvement in the murder of a security guard last month. Dilip had gone to attend a shraddh ceremony when he was picked up.


An armed gang robbed Rs 80,000 from a petrol pump on the Kona Expressway at Jagachha, Howrah, early on Monday. The gang of six had come on two motorbikes posing as customers, said a cop.
