Habra: The body of a higher secondary examinee was fished out of a pond in Habra, North 24-Parganas, early on Friday.

Police said Joy Debnath, 18, had left home on Thursday evening. When he didn't return, his family and neighbours started searching and found his body floating in a pond in the area.

Preliminary investigation revealed the teenager couldn't swim.

"But how he fall into the pond is not clear. There's no apparent reason for going near the pond that late in winter," an officer of Habra police station said.

Some residents claimed they saw him running along a road near the pond with some youths behind him.

"It appears he was being chased and he jumped into the water to save himself. We are investigating if the boy was caught by those who were after him before being pushed into the pond," the officer said.

The police will go through the call detail record of his phone to check if he had left home after receiving a call from someone, the officer said.
