Calcutta, Aug. 25: Author Tarapada Roy died at SSKM Hospital today. He was 70.

Roy, who had been hospitalised on July 10, succumbed to kidney failure around 2pm.

He was one of the best humorists in modern Bengal, with popular titles like Dodo-Tatai, Kandogyan and Gyan-Gomyi. Roy was also a poet — his first book Tomar Pratima was a collection of poems — and an author of serious works like Porabari Charabari, Mandhata and Kothay Jachchen Tarapadababu.

He was cremated at the Nimtala burning ghat.
