Bhangar: A college student riding a scooter was allegedly waylaid and molested by a youth in Bhangar, South 24-Parganas, on Wednesday afternoon. The youth also allegedly threatened to throw acid at the woman if she lodged a complaint.

The youth fled after the woman screamed for help.

Police said the woman was waylaid near Chanditala, about 30km from the heart of the city, when she was returning home from college. "The woman said in her complaint that the youth had stopped the two-wheeler and grabbed her hand. He threatened her saying he would sprinkle acid on her face if she lodged any complaint," said an officer of Bhangar police station.

The woman alleged that the attacker in his late 20s tried to drag her behind a bush. "I started screaming for help. The accused saw a vehicle approaching us and fled," the officer said.

The police suspect the accused is a local youth.

"The woman told us that she saw the accused standing beside the road. When she came closer to him, the youth blocked her way. The woman had no option but to stop her scooter. It seems the youth knew that the woman would return home around that time," another officer of the police station said. "The woman has given a detailed description of how the youth looks like. It will help us track her down."
