Alipore: The city experienced winter-like weather for the first time this season on Tuesday as the maximum temperature dropped by almost two degrees and a stiff breeze blew all day. Even after the thick fog early in the morning cleared, a layer of mist hung over the city to accentuate the wintry conditions.

The day's maximum temperature was 22.6 degrees Celsius, four degrees below normal for this time of the year. The Met office has forecast similar conditions in the next two days. The skies could remain cloudy because of moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal.

A week ago, the maximum temperature had been 30.2 degrees, two notches above normal. The mercury stayed in the high 20s till Saturday. The sharp fall in the maximum temperature on Tuesday is the reason why, even though the minimum reading was higher than Monday's at 15.9 degrees, Calcuttans felt much colder.

In contrast, many had missed the cold on Sunday despite the temperature dropping to its lowest of the season at 14.5 degrees. The key factor was a quick rise thereafter.
