Darjeeling, June 8: The groundwork to set up the first central university in Sikkim has started with the Union human resource ministry appointing Mahendra P. Lama (in picture) as the vice-chancellor.
“The human resource development ministry announced this a couple of days ago. They called me to convey the decision taken by the President,” Lama said in an email to The Telegraph. At the age of 45 years, Lama becomes the youngest vice-chancellor in the country. “I am expecting to take up this challenging assignment (as a VC) in July,” Lama said.
Lama, a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, was selected from a panel of academicians and administrators recommended by a committee from the ministry. He is also the chief economic adviser to the Sikkim chief minister.
The day Lama is appointed, the details of the university will be declared.
