Salt Lake: Police arrested a 31-year-old man in Salt Lake's Baisakhi on Tuesday in connection with the recent theft of smartphones, laptops and various electronic gadgets.

Cops of Bidhannagar East police station picked up Nunnu Sarkar from near the footbridge in Baisakhi.

Sarkar, who lives in Basirhat, used to walk the streets of the township in Sector II after sunset and look out for open windows, an officer of the police station said.

He used to carry a small stick with a hook attached at one end hidden inside his shirt, the officer said.

Whenever he saw an open window, he would walk past it three to four times to see if any electronic gadget was lying nearby, he said.

Once he was certain of not getting caught, he would pull gadgets like smartphones or laptops with the stick towards the window.

Apart from houses with open windows, Sarkar would target flats where students or IT employees stayed together, the officer said.

The police have booked Sarkar under various IPC sections, including 379 (theft).

The charges carry a maximum punishment of three years in jail and/or fine.

A Salt Lake court on Tuesday sent him to three days' police custody.
