Calcutta, April 5: Reputable dermatologist and former MP Ranjit Kumar Panja died in a city nursing home this afternoon following a heart attack.

He was 74 and is survived by his wife, son and daughter.

Panja, who had kidney and heart problems, was rushed to the nursing home after he felt uncomfortable this morning.

“Ranjit Panja died due to acute myocardial infarction,” a medical bulletin issued by the nursing home said.

City skin specialists recalled his powerful observation and accurate diagnosis. “He was one of the best dermatologists in the country. We were very close. Often we used to discuss difficult dermatological cases,” said Salil Panja, a former head of the dermatology department at SSKM Hospital and his cousin.

Ranjit Panja had authored over 100 research papers and a book. He had been the president of the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists and was a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh.

Elder brother of former Union minister Ajit Panja, Ranjit Panja was elected to the Lok Sabha ? in 1998 and 1999 ? from Barasat on Trinamul Congress tickets.

In 2004, he lost his seat to Subrata Basu of the Forward Block. Panja used to live at Sisir Kunja near Madhyamgram.

He was the chairman of Trinamul’s North 24-Parganas committee and a party working committee member.
