Police control room plan

Siliguri: The metropolitan police is in the process of building an advanced control room for better monitoring of the city and its surrounding areas and for traffic management, senior officers said here on Sunday.

They said more than 100 CCTV cameras would be installed across the city for surveillance of traffic.

Also, a proposal to set up a separate police station at "Bhorer Alo," the mega tourism hub that is coming up at Gazoldoba near the Teesta Barrage Project, has been sent to the state, the officers said.

"An advanced police control room will be ready here in a month. The control room will have infrastructure to check out the live footage of 105 CCTV cameras which would be installed across the city, right from Darjeeling More to Jalpai More, (two major entry points of the city)," said Niraj Kumar Singh, the outgoing commissioner of the Siliguri metropolitan police.

On Monday, he also handed over the charge to Sunil Kumar Choudhary, the new commissioner of the SMP.

"The objective of this sophisticated control room is to monitor activities round the clock. It would also help keep a tab on traffic in and around the city. We have already installed 93 CCTV cameras which are operational now," said Singh.

Police sources the cameras had helped them keep vigil in different areas of Siliguri during recent festival.

In the past couple of days, they have arrested 125 people for different violations and have also collected over Rs 2 lakh from 372 people for violating traffic rules.

Singh also spoke about proposals of new police stations.
