Bolpur, July 16: A committee formed by guardians of Patha Bhavan students today submitted an open letter to Visva-Bharati authorities criticising them for lodging a police complaint against the parents of a Class V girl who was allegedly forced to lick her urine by a hostel warden.

The parents had been arrested on July 8 following a complaint of “trespassing” by the varsity authorities.

“Was it necessary to take police action against the parents of the girl just to show institutional powers? On behalf of the Santiniketan Sriniketan Abhibhabak Kalyan Samiti, we protest the show of such institutional power,” the letter in Bengali said. It also said Patha Bhavan authorities should have kept wardens with “proper training”.

The letter was submitted to the principal of Patha Bhavan, Bodhirupa Sinha. Copies were sent to Visva-Bharati vice-chancellor Sushanta Duttagupta and registrar Monimukut Mitra.

Sinha today wrote to the parents of the Class V girl, saying their daughter could continue as a day scholar till July 31 or “till she is out of her present state of mind”.

The girl’s grandfather said he had received the letter. “My granddaughter does not want to go back to the school.”
