Calcutta: The Jai Balaji Group Kolkata Trail Run 2018, in association with The Telegraph, will kick off its third edition on Sunday.

There will be three categories - 21K, 10K and 5K - and runners will meander through off-road paths in villages, fields and narrow roads between the water bodies of the East Calcutta Wetlands.

The growing numbers - from 100 in 2016 to 600 last year to the 1,500 registered till now for this year - show the gaining popularity of the race, an organising official of Sportiz, an event management company, said.

There's a charity angle to most successful runs around the world and that is what this run has taken up this year. The entire earnings from the registrations - the organisers expect around Rs 10 lakh - will go to an NGO, Friends of Tribals Society.

The NGO runs more than 55,000 "Ekal Vidyalayas", which provide non-formal primary education to children in the 6 to 14 age group in various states.

"This time we wanted to extend the rewards of the success towards one of the biggest needs of our country - education," Nishant Maheshwari, founder and director, Sportiz, said.

The runs will start from the holding area of Godrej Waterside IT Park in Sector V.
