Alipurduar: Violence erupted at Dhanirampur in Falakata block as government officials and policemen were attacked by suspected Trinamul and BJP supporters over the formation of board at Dhanirampur 1 panchayat on Friday.

Six government officials and five policemen were injured. The police had to burst teargas shells and resort to lathi charge. Four persons have been arrested.

In the rural elections, the BJP has secured majority in the panchayat by securing nine of 14 seats while the remaining seats had gone to Trinamul.

Accordingly, policemen were posted at the panchayat office to prevent any breach of peace. BJP supporters and the elected members started assembling near the office in the morning. A team of six officials, led by T.D. Bhutia, the joint BDO of Falakata, headed for the panchayat office from Falakata in a vehicle.

"As we reached near a bridge located around 10km from the office, a group of miscreants with covered faces hurled stones and bricks at the vehicle. All of us were injured," said an official.

The attackers even brought down the officer who was supposed to work as presiding officer during formation of the board, and snatched some of the official documents.

The vehicle driver, however, acted quickly and managed to get the team out of the location. All were taken to the block health centre in Falakata and provided with necessary treatment.

As the news spread, the BDO of Falakata announced that formation of the board had been postponed. Then, alleged BJP supporters turned violent and attacked the policemen posted at the panchayat office with bricks and stones.
