Raiganj: An assistant sub-inspector of police in Malda district alleged that he had been roughed up by an officer-in-charge and other policemen on Wednesday night for objecting to their corruption.

Mohammad Nurul Islam, posted at Bhutni police station, has been admitted to Malda Medical College and Hospital with injuries. The accused OC of Bhutni, Tarun Saha, denied the charges and said Islam had, in fact, been warned several times over malpractices.

"The OC and some other policemen at Bhutni extort money from contractors and collect bribes from those who turn up at the police station. I used to raise objections to their activities," said Islam.

On Wednesday night, Saha, along with another sub-inspector and three ASIs, allegedly attacked Islam at the police station. "All of them beat me up with belts and sticks. Somehow, I escaped."

Malda police chief Arnab Ghosh said a departmental inquiry had been ordered.
