Calcutta: The chairperson of Kangleipak Communist Party, Military Council (Progressive), a Manipur-based outlawed outfit, was arrested from Esplanade on Saturday evening.

Amon Nelson Singh, 28, alias Chingkhei Khuman or Maheikhomba Meitei, was rounded up after the Special Task Force (STF) of Calcutta police received specific information about his visit to the city. One 9mm pistol, two 7mm pistols and three rounds of ammunition were found with him.

"He has confessed to carrying out extortion in Manipur," said Murli Dhar, deputy commissioner of police, STF.

"Last year, some members of the outfit were arrested for a jewellery shop robbery in Calcutta. We are probing if Amon was involved in that," an STF officer said. Amon is the third member of the outfit to be arrested in the past month.
