Ashoknagar: A man has been accused of driving his wife to suicide to be able to remarry.
Firoz Haque's wife, Habiba Khatun, was found hanging at her home in Ashoknagar's South Guma area, about 48km from Calcutta, on Tuesday.
Police started a case against Firoz after Habiba's family lodged a complaint with Ashoknagar police station, holding him responsible for her death. Firoz has since been on the run, the police said.
"We have received a complaint from the victim's family. We are waiting for the post- mortem report," said an officer of Ashoknagar police station. "An analysis of the ligature mark on her neck would confirm whether she was murdered first and then hanged or she had committed suicide by hanging herself."
Firoz married Habiba eight years ago. "Habiba's parents had spent a lavish amount on the wedding," the officer said. But within a year, she started complaining that her in-laws were demanding more. Kashemul Seikh, her father, told the police that he had pleaded with Habiba's in-laws to spare him.
Habiba was allegedly tortured physically and mentally.
Her family allegedly received a call around 9am on Tuesday, informing them about her suicide. She last spoke to her parents over phone two hours before that, a family member said.
