Calcutta, July 26: Locket Chatterjee, the newly appointed president of the BJP Mahila Morcha in Bengal, today launched her first political initiative by announcing plans for a self-defence outfit for women in rural areas.

"Under Mamata Banerjee's regime, women in Bengal are the most vulnerable section in the society. Her administration has always been indifferent towards crimes against women. So, we thought of setting up the Matri Shakti Vahini for protection of women and their children in Bengal's villages," she said.

Sources in the BJP said the initiative was Locket's attempt at revamping the party's women's wing, which was being led by actress and Rajya Sabha MP Roopa Ganguly before her, in the run-up to the panchayat polls due next year.

"Locket wants to come to the forefront and now is her chance. She will plan and launch programmes after programmes and subtly underscore the difference she has made from Roopa's time....," said a state BJP functionary.

"The current state leadership will be co-operative towards Locket.... Besides, Mahila Morcha national president Vijaya Rahatkar herself is likely to back her" he added.

The sources said the move would also strengthen the organisation in the villages in the run-up to the panchayat polls.
