Left with no option

The authorities did not leave us with any option. They are playing with the future of the students who badly need hostel accommodation. We have been holding the sit-in for 40 days to protest the delay in the renovation of Eden Hindu Hostel. Many are suffering from malaria but the authorities are not bothered. The two blocks of Hindu Hostel are ready. They could have handed the hostel to us. They are intentionally delaying the hand-over. The renovation of the hostel, shut since July 29, 2015, had started only after we had protested during governor Keshari Nath Tripathi's visit to the campus on January 19. We believe if the protest was withdrawn, the authorities would again be lax. The movements at Jadavpur University and Calcutta Medical College have proved that only sustained protests can make the authorities accept legitimate demands.

Mosquito nets and clothes lines in the corridor outside VC Anuradha Lohia’s office on Monday morning. The place has been like this since the protest over the delay in Eden Hindu Hostel repairs started on August 1.

The protest at Presidency on the eve of the convocation, during which teachers were barred from entering the campus, left students divided on whether what the protesters were doing was right or wrong. Subhankar Chowdhury of Metro spoke to two students from the opposing camps
