Police arrested six persons, including two constables of Calcutta police, one state police constable and a Border Security Force personnel, from Birbhum’s Labhpur on Thursday night and rescued Soumen Kumar Bose, who they had allegedly kidnapped from Chandni Chowk earlier in the evening.

Among the six arrested is Avijit Ghosh of English Bazar in Malda, who is accused to have plotted the abduction because Bose had allegedly collected Rs 1 crore from him promising government jobs, the police said.

Ghosh had handed over the money to Bose after collecting it from several persons on the promise of providing them state government jobs, the police said. Bose allegedly refused to refund the money when he failed to arrange for the jobs.

Those arrested included Calcutta police constables Shyamal Mondal and Jakir Khan, state armed police constable Mohammed Hanif, BSF jawan Amir Hossain, and Labhpur resident Manjarul Haque.

“In the course of investigation it transpired that Ghosh had plotted the abduction and engaged five persons with a promise to offer 40 per cent of the recovered amount,” said an officer of Calcutta police.

After officers at the Lalbazar police control room got a random call about a person being kidnapped from near a mall on Central Avenue near Chandni Chowk around 3.10pm on Thursday, they immediately scanned CCTV footage and zeroed in on a Mahindra Bolero.

By that time the SUV had crossed Vidyasagar Setu. Tracking the SUV’s registration number the police found that the Bolero belonged to Alam Seikh of Labhpur. A team of sleuths left for Birbhum and passed on the information to the officer-in-charge of Labhpur police station.

“In Labhpur, we seized the vehicle and interrogated the SUV’s driver, Seikh Suleman,” said an officer of Labhpur police station.

Based on Suleman’s inputs, cops rescued Bose from a Labhpur hotel. In the next few hours, the six accused were arrested from Labhpur.
