Police arrested three persons from Purulia railway station on Monday and recovered a part of the gold jewellery stolen from a jewellery shop in Durgapur on Sunday.

Purulia: Police arrested three persons from Purulia railway station on Monday and recovered a part of the gold jewellery stolen from a jewellery shop in Durgapur on Sunday.

Two loaded pistols and seven rounds of live cartridges were seized from the trio.

Acting on a tip-off, plainclothesmen were deployed at the railway station and three persons were found roaming suspiciously on the platform.

The police said the three were waiting to board a train to Bihar or Jharkhand to escape when they were intercepted.

Akash Magharia, the superintendent of police, Purulia, said the three had failed to give satisfactory replies and were arrested.

"They were carrying bags. We had prior information that some miscreants would try to escape by train and deployed plainclothesmen at the station," said the SP.

The arrested were identified as Pradip Singh, 35, Deepak Kumar, 28, and Adit Nag, 24, all residents of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.

The police recovered 90 grams of stolen gold jewellery with tags of the jewellery shop looted in Durgapur.

The police said during interrogation, the three had confessed to stealing gold ornaments from the shop and said other gang members had already fled to a Bihar hideout with the remaining loot.

The SP said the police in Asansol-Durgapur commissionerate had been informed about the arrest and recovery.

A police team has already gone to Purulia from Durgapur to interrogate the arrested persons.

On Sunday, a gang of armed miscreants looted around 9kg of gold ornaments and Rs 4 lakh in cash from Guinea Gold Jewellers Pvt Ltd near Durgapur station bazaar.
