Burglars broke into an elderly couple’s flat near Harish Park on Harish Mukherjee Road on Saturday afternoon and stole jewellery worth nearly Rs 15 lakh while they were away for three hours.

The four-storey building where the couple live comprises seven more flats but are lying vacant at present.

The couple — whose son and daughter are settled outside Calcutta — stay on the top floor.

The incident occurred between 11am and 2pm when Pramod Kumar Saraf, 66, had gone to Howrah and his wife Sashi, 62, was at the market.

When Sashi returned, the door was ajar, the almirahs were ransacked and the jewellery kept in one of them was missing.

“My wife had recently brought the ornaments home from the bank locker for Diwali and a marriage in the family later this month,” said Saraf, a lawyer and an income tax consultant.

Saraf said his wife found the lock of the collapsible door and the latch broken. Three almirahs and beds in the three-bedroom flat were ransacked.

“The burglars did not touch any expensive gadget, apparels or showpieces. They only took the gold jewellery which were kept in one of the almirahs,” said Saraf.

“We have been living in this flat as tenants for the past 30 years. But now it has become extremely unsafe as all the other residents of the building have left,” said Saraf.

Police said they have interrogated the domestic help who has been working at the couple’s house for the past seven years. “No one has been arrested yet,” said an officer of Bhowanipore police station.
